The week of Sept 19 is Louisiana Craft Beer Week and what’s better than a little friendly competition to make things interesting?! On Saturday, September 24, we're hosting a beer can derby, where contestants make race cars out of beer cans and run them down a giant track (kind of like Matchbox or Pinewood Derby, but for adults). Prizes will be given to both the fastest and best-looking cars.
Each car may be entered into one of two categories: speed or “best in show.” You can enter the same car into both categories, but be sure to indicate that at registration. Cars entered for speed will be raced on our custom-made track, while best in show will be judged solely on looks (although there are still a few rules). For those racing their car, we will randomly create a bracket and select 2 cars at a time to race. If your car is first you will move on to the next round of racing. There will be prizes awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place cars in the speed category.
ALL CARS MUST PASS INSPECTION TO QUALIFY FOR THE RACE. Following are the inspection points for the speed category:
- Great Raft Brewing cans must be incorporated in the build of the car. Cutting and shaping is allowed. Stomping on it and taping it to your car is not.
- The car weight shall not exceed 12.0 ounces. The official race scale shall be considered final.
- The overall length of the car shall not exceed 10 inches.
- The overall width of the car shall not exceed 4.5 inches.
- The car must have 1.75 inches clearance between the wheels.
- The car must have 3/8 inches clearance underneath the body.
- The car may be shaped any way that is desired.
- The car must be freewheeling, with no starting devices.
To win Best in Show, it is all about the curb appeal. For this category you can go all out using a Great Raft can or bottle. There are no limitations to size and weight, but remember if you intend on racing your car it must pass inspection to qualify.
Competitors are allowed to enter multiple cars. For each car you enter there will be a $5 entry fee. This entry fee will benefit Community Renewal, a local non-profit that unites caring partners to help create an environment where every child can feel safe and loved.
Each car must pass inspection by the official inspection committee before it will be allowed to compete. The Inspection Committee has the responsibility to disqualify those cans that do not meet these specifications. You will not receive a refund if your car is disqualified on race day.
Check in for inspection will start at 2 and the race will start at 3. Winners for Best in Show will be announced after the racing has concluded.
To enter a car in either the race or best in show you will need to sign up in the Great Raft Brewing tasting room during normal tasting room hours. If you are not able to make it by the tasting room please contact Bob to coordinate registration and payment. Bob@greatraftbrewing.com or 318-272-6573. For ideas and inspiration, click here.
The biggest thing to remember is that this is for fun and will benefit a great cause. The official judge’s decision will be final in all matters. Have fun and good luck.
